Diabetic Ulcers

Wound Care Surgeons provide evaluation and treatment of all wound types including diabetic ulcers. A diabetic ulcer is a wound that occurs on the feet, heel or toes of people with diabetes. Many times, there is little to no feeling in the feet or to the ulcer itself. A pulse is present, and the skin is normal or warm to the touch. The skin on the legs and feet may be dry and flaky. It occurs in 15% of people with diabetes and 84% of all diabetes-related lower leg amputations. There are many factors that contribute to the risk of developing diabetic ulcers. It is common in people with poor glucose control, obesity, diminished pulse in extremities, and nerve damage in feet.

Diabetes is a type of metabolic disorder that hinders the normal steps of the wound healing. If you have an ulcer that has not started to heal in 6 weeks. Your ulcer may need special care. Avoid cutting your ulcers or calluses yourself. These wounds are the primary entry for infection. Early detection and appropriate treatment may prevent up to 85% of amputations.

The patients suffering from diabetic ulcers need proper treatment. Debridement is used commonly in standard wound treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Debridement is needed to remove dead tissue, foreign debris, and bacterial growth to stimulate healthy tissue growth. Dead tissue can increase odor and exudate, making it susceptible for bacteria and other harmful microorganisms to spread. Only a qualified clinician can determine if debridement is required after a comprehensive assessment.
